The Merlion

This Postcard travelled ??Kms to Czech Republic. This is a private swap. At the time of posting, the Merlion has just been restored to public display after being repaired from a lighting strike. The lighting strike left a gaping hole on the top of the Merlion.

The Merlion is an imaginary creature with the head of a lion and the body of a fish. Its name combines "mer" meaning the sea and "lion". The fish body comes from Singapore's ancient name back when it was a fishing village — Temesak — meaning "sea town" in Javanese. The lion head represents Singapore's original name — Singapura — meaning "lion city" in Malay.

Raffles Hotel

This Postcard travelled 3,838Kms to China!

Synonymous to Raffles Hotel is the "Singapore Sling" which is really one of the famous drinks of Singapore. The Hotel is also named after the founder of Singapore Sir Stamford Raffles. Raffles Hotel is also known for its its luxurious accommodation and superb restaurants.

The Esplanade

This postcard travelled 9,422kms to Finland!

Sitting on the background of the Singapore River is the Esplanade. The Esplanade is well-known for the very interesting design and there is a whole trial of "nicknames" given to it. The most famous being "The Durian" Taxi drivers in Singapore would know if you decide to tell them that you want to get to "The Durian". Great place to watch world class performances. In the near future, the waterfront would boost a nice view of the marina sands casino and resorts. Visit the website here.

Marina Barrage - Reservoir in the city

The Marina Barrage is a dam built across the 350-metre wide Marina Channel to keep out seawater, forming Singapore’s first reservoir in the city and 15th reservoir. Marina Reservoir combines with the future Punggol and Serangoon reservoirs will increase Singapore’s water catchment areas from half to two-thirds of Singapore’s land areas.

With the barrage in place, the Marina Basin will turn into a body of freshwater through natural flushing in one two to years. The freshwater will then be treated using advanced membrane technology before consumption.

Visited the Marina Barrage today..not too bad an experience..especially for e kids. This photo above is the dam that keeps out the seawater. You can see evidently from the colours of the water. We had some time to spend in the cafe and the cafe offers a good view of the dam minus the heat from the sun : ). Other areas includes the huge grass turf, that will be great for a picnic, if not for the overpowering sun. All in all, the kid had the best experience at this place.. the water feature doubles up well as a place for kids to run around and get wet...something the adults wish to do too : ) I will probably return again to this place in the evening to catch the Singapore skyline at its best. Clarke Quay

This postcard shows the very colourful part of the Singapore River, Clarke Quay. Located beside Boat Quay, this part of the river has been revamped to give it a very colourful and definitely lively feel. Come in the night and you will be treated to a array of dazzling lights. Also, be sure to take one of the river rides to catch a glimpse of Singapore skyline from the Singapore River.

To catch a good view Clarke Quay, you can visit one of the food outlets located inside "The Central" Shopping center. Dine away with an awesome view.

I could not resist buying this postcard of the Singapore Flyer. The majestic structure against the cloudy / sunset sky is just simply nice. Great Photography : )

Singapore Flyer (SG-13419)

This postcard is travelling 10,220 kms to Germany!

This postcard is a picture taken of The Singapore Flyer, the latest addition to the attractions in Singapore. Offering a great view of the F1 Grand Prix held in Singapore during end Sept 08, it also offers a good view of the Singapore skyline and eventually the Integrated Resorts; to be completed in 2010.

ekohs visited the Singapore Flyer in Oct 08. We have attached some photos and a video clip of our "flight" in the flyer. It was a night flight and it was really gorgeous to see the Integrated Resorts & casino in the midst of construction buried in a sea of lights.

You can also see the business district also commonly seen in postcards showing the famous skyline of Singapore. Although, recently the Singapore Flyer was closed due to some investigations to the emergency procedures, it was reopened with much welcome from the public. Immediately after the reopening, you can again see the once familiar crowd that used to accompany the flight "Cubicles".

While you are there, take the opportunity to visit one of the many restaurants that is located within the Singapore Flyer building. Many of them offer great food at reasonable prices (be sure to check the promos for better rates!) and most important of all, some have a good view of the Benjamin Sheares Bridge. After dinner, you can take a casual stroll along the outside of the Singapore Flyer complex that has a walkway linking to the pit stop areas of the Singapore Grand Prix 08. The tyre marks of the F1 cars are still evident on the track. One thing for sure, the tyre tracks of Ferrari's car can still be clearly seen on the first pit stop : ) Like they say, "smell the rubber!"
